Shortbus Studio

Art expanding horizons and options for people in need...

Yancey Residential Services is a private, non-profit agency which provides a variety of programs and services to individuals with serious developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome.

The agency recently opened an outsider art gallery called Shortbus Studio. The gallery provides adults with developmental disabilities an opportunity to express their natural artistic ability and sense of humor. The gallery allows these artists to publicly present original designs, and to generate funds to help support this project.

Transom.Org

Presented as a showcase and workshop for new public, Transom is much more.  It's great value is not just as an entity connected to public radio, but as a resource center for digital storytellers.  You can know next to nothing about digital audio and from this site alone figure out enough to create, edit and post a piece of work on any topic.

The site is centered exclusively around audio media, with the implied intent that it be used in public radio production.  The tools, resources and workflow concepts available on the site are adaptable to small scale and local use:  creating audio pieces for websites or podcasts, for presentations at events, as a part of an art installation, or of course for submission to mainstream radio channels.  Transom fundamentally is about empowering people to create their own audio stories.
